PEACE IN LIBYA

Vatican Voices Hope for Peace in Libya

Laments Systems Based on Power, Not Human Dignity

VATICAN CITY, OCT. 21, 2011 (Zenit.org).- The Vatican responded to Thursday’s news of the death of Libya’s dictator with a statement expressing the hope that Libyans will be spared further violence.

The note, released late Thursday, said the news of the dictator’s death “marks the end of a much too long and tragic phase of a brutal struggle to bring down a harsh and oppressive regime.”

The statement emphasized that “this dramatic event” leads to reflection on “the immense toll of human suffering which accompanies the affirmation and collapse of any system which is not based on the respect and dignity of the human person, but rather on the prevailing affirmation of power.”

The Vatican urged the international community to be generous in assisting Libya to rebuild and it also noted its own first contacts with the new leaders.

Pope’s Message for World Day of Migrants and Refugees

Pope’s Message for World Day of Migrants and Refugees

A New Evangelization Also in the Vast and Complex Phenomenon of Human Mobility”

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Proclaiming Jesus Christ the one Saviour of the world “constitutes the essential mission of the Church. It is a task and mission which the vast and profound changes of present-day society make all the more urgent” (Evangelii Nuntiandi, 14). Indeed, today we feel the urgent need to give a fresh impetus and new approaches to the work of evangelization in a world in which the breaking down of frontiers and the new processes of globalization are bringing individuals and peoples even closer. This is both because of the development of the means of social communication and because of the frequency and ease with which individuals and groups can move about today. In this new situation we must reawaken in each one of us the enthusiasm and courage that motivated the first Christian communities to be undaunted heralds of the Gospel’s newness, making St Paul’s words resonate in our hearts: “For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!” (1 Cor 9:16).

THE QWSQWAM PROJECT

THE QWSQWAM PROJECT

He is a refugee in Sudan from Eritrea,  a gifted  artist who gives shape to his pains, fears, hopes and challenges. In Sudan he cannot work, but his family need to be fed. As “illegal aliens”his children do not go to regular schools. He hears of Canada, a land that welcomes people willing to make a contribution with their talents. A flow of refugees with family in Canada pass him by and wish him well. He does not have anyone in Canada, nor in Australia or the United States, to support him for the first months until he settles down and finds a job. The Plight Of Eritrean Refugees Group from the Eritrean Chaplaincy  want to give him a chance to make it in Canada. We depend on your generosity for this dream to come true.   This ticket will provide him and his family one meal. Thank you. “It is in giving that we receive . . .” (St. Francis).
